Cordelia and the Whale
I just finished Cordelia and the Whale by Michelle Nelson-Schmidt. Like many others, I have loved Michelle’s picture books and was thrilled to hear she was working on a novel following Cordelia as an adolescent.
Set on an island, it seemed fitting to read this novel while on the island of Guam.
Cordelia and the Whale is an awesome and quick read. Cordelia is an introvert feeling different from the people around her. She feels weird and out of place. This novel follows Cordelia as she discovers and interacts with a whale who shows Cordelia how amazing she really is. Rediscover your inner magic through this middle grade novel and be sure to share with a child or teacher that would love this book!
I managed to finish it in one day once I got into it. The setting of the novel and characters quickly absorbed me and I soon lost myself in the magical energy of Cordelia and Beatrice. This is a book you can read again and again when you’re feeling down and need a quick reminder that you are indeed amazing and fully capable of so many things.
Favorite Quotes in Cordelia and the Whale
Many times, I grabbed a pen to jot down my favorite quotes from the book. Here are just a few that stood out to me.
We all have the ability to change our story. Sometimes, we just need a little inspiration.
Sometimes our dreams are so incredible, we want to hold on to them and never let go. This is exactly how Cordelia felt about her dream of a magnificent whale.
This is one quote that I could read again and again. It reminds me of Echart Tolle’s book, The Power of Now. We, as humans, get so busy, we often forget the beauty all around us.
As a teacher, I am absolutely in love with this quote. This, more than anything else, is what our children need to hear. Learn and never stop. Be wrong, make mistakes, learn from them, and pick yourself up again.
This quote gives me chills! People often just live their days in a daze, but this book calls us to wake up and connect to the human beings around us! How can we be extraordinary and help others be the same?
If you’re looking for a new book to read that’ll lift your spirits, or you want a new books for home or the classroom, let is be Cordelia and the Whale.
